There are two main categories of home insurance.
- Buildings Insurance. This policy protects the bricks and mortar of your home, such as the structure and walls.
- Contents Insurance. This policy protects the contents of your home, such as your furniture and appliances.
Most homeowners will avail themselves of both, often on the same extended 'cover all' policy.
Due to the principle of insurable interest, buildings and contents insurance policies may or may not be held by the same person.
- Buildings cover is normally taken out by the home or lease owner, who of course may or may not be the dweller.
- Contents cover is taken out by the occupier of the building, be it a tenent or an owner-occupier.
