UK Credit Cards - using your account

Managing the UK Credit Card account is crucial.

Once the account is open, the customer can carry out transactions with the card, up to the limit of the card, which may vary from £50 to many thousands of pounds.

The customer can make a cash withdrawal, which will normally be subjest to a maximum daily allowance which is different to your credit limit. For this service, there will be a transaction charge. This charge is normally a percentage of the withdrawl, but is usually subject to a minimum charge. Typical charges is 2%-3%, with a minimum of about £3.

The customer can purchases goods in a shop, by phone or on the internet, free of additional charges above the normal cash price with that merchant. If there is a credit card surcharge, the merchant is in breach of his credit card account terms and conditions and can be reported to the credit card company, who will take corrective action.

The bank will issue statements at the end of each billing period, which is normally one month. The statement will detail the transactions made during the billing period, and provide information on when and how to pay the bill, in two forms. The first option will be to pay the entire balance by a certain date, and the customer will incur no interest charges.

The second date will normally be some days or weeks later offering the customer the option of paying 'the mimumum amount' (or more) by that date. The customer may elect to repay in this manner, and still be abiding by the terms and conditions of the account.

However, the customer will become liable to interest charges for the entire balance from the date of the statement.
